Current Project

Assessing the influence of urban planning and territorial strategies on regional food systems

Food systems are more connected and integrated to the global flow of resources than ever before, nevertheless, the increase in the availability of food did not keep up with the capacity of access and the quality of food being consumed. Simultaneously, especially in developing countries, after decades of steadily decline, levels of hunger and malnutrition are again on the rise, together with obesity rates and food-related diseases. Urban spaces are key to determine the sustainability and resilience of the food systems they are in and the quality of the food environment that the population faces. Therefore, the research aims to assess the territorial role on food security, mapping food systems of the global south to support resilience strategies.
