Johann holds a B.Sc. in Business Administration and Economics from the University of Passau and a Master’s degree in Research Development Economics from Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. He gained experience in the development sector during an internship for GIZ in Ethiopia, where he supported a project for the re-integration ef ex-combatants. His previous research includes environmental economics, institutions and statistical capacity development.

His PhD reseach "Costs/benefits of climate policies in the context of informal economies" is part of the European Joint Doctorate “ADAPTED” (ERADICATING POVERTY: PATHWAYS TOWARDS ACHIEVING THE SDGS) which is funded from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No 956909 and coordinated by the IEE. He is jointly supervised by Prof. Dr. Mathilde Maurel (Centre d’Economie de la Sorbonne, University Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne (UP1), Centre National de Recherche Scientifique, France) and Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Löwenstein (IEE).
