SA-GER CDR: Updates on the Programme at UWC/Cape Town

Britta Niklas shares news on new graduates, a new call for scholarship applications, and the start of the studies for new scholarship holders.

6 new scholarship holders commenced their studies in January 2017

For the 2017 intake, the SA-GER CDR received 231 Masters and 195 PhD applications. In August 2016, the selection committee selected 4 Masters and 2 PhD students for a Centre scholarship - 2 years for Masters’ programmes and 3 years for PhD programmes. In January 2017, the 6 new scholarship holders commenced their studies at the School of Government and the Institute for Social Development (ISD).

Faisal Haginour from Somaliland was selected for the Master in Public Administration, while Boniswa Gelese from South Africa, Joy Mwaniki from Kenya, and Linice Sanga from Malawi started the Masters programme in Development Studies.

Irene Nyamu (Kenya) started her research project at the Institute for Social Development (ISD) in order to obtain a PhD in International Development Studies. Fikrewold Tamirat (Ethiopia) started his research project at the School of Government within the Public Policy PhD Programme.

New Call for Scholarship Applications - Deadline 31st July 2017

The Call for Applications for Masters (MA Development Studies and MA Public Administration) and PhD Scholarships (PhD in Development Studies and PhD in Public Policy) for the 2018 intake is open until 31st July 2017.

All applicants must submit an online application form. The online application form and more information is available on the website www.drd-sa.org, especially on the “How to apply” pages of the respective programme sections.

New Graduates at the SA-GER CDR

Due to protests, the graduation of students who finished their studies at UWC took place in March 2017.

Davison Muchadenyika graduated from his PhD after only 2 years. His PhD thesis “Social movements and planning institutions in urban transformation: Housing in metropolitan Harare, Zimbabwe (2000-2015)" was supervised by Prof. J.J. Williams.

Several Master students have also completed their studies. Mirjam Fusenig, who graduated last year in the Master in Development Management has now additionally graduated with a Master of Arts, cum laude. Her topic “The impact of fairtrade on the quality of life of workers on wine estates in the Western Cape Province, South Africa” was supervised by Dr. Sharon Penderis.
