MADM: An Internship Offering Great Opportunities

Nardos Legesse Beyene, Ethiopian student in the MADM programme, shares some of his experiences during an internship with World Vision.

This Spring of 2017, it was time for the internship term of the MADM programme, which proved to go beyond my expectations - my internship experience with World Vision Germany has truly been extraordinary. World Vision Germany is a Christian relief, development, and advocacy organization dedicated to working with children, families, and communities to overcome poverty and injustice. The organization supports development and humanitarian projects in 99 countries through child sponsorship. Beginning from the second week of February, up to the end of April 2017, I have enjoyed the privilege of serving as an intern for World Vision, International Programme Department in Friedrichsdorf, Germany. The internship is part of the MADM programme and the internship position was facilitated by the IEE. The opportunity has been very rewarding as it bridges my academic experience in the classroom with practical development cooperation work in the real world.

Over the three months of my internship at World Vision, I worked in two divisions: the East Africa Region (EAR) Programme unit, and the Design, Monitoring and Evaluation (DME) division within the international Programme Department. I became familiar with World Vision’s cooperation with like-minded international and national NGOs, grass root level organizations, community based organizations, faith based organizations, governmental institutions, and the functions and responsibilities of the international programme department in general. The World Vision staff also involved me into the daily routine of the division. I also got some insight into the overall programme management, the implementation of area development programmes, fund raising, monitoring and evaluation techniques, different donors’ guidelines, accountability and transparency methods, and partnership works.

Work Experience and Different Trainings

I have gained valuable work experience by assisting the international Programme Department staff in the review of annual project management reports in the East Africa Region which included Ethiopia, Kenya, Burundi, and Tanzania. Other tasks were the end of programme evaluation analysis of grants and area programmes, the review of proposals for Private Non-Sponsorship (PNS) projects, the review of end of programme impact reports, and transition and sustainability plans for area programmes. I was also able to take part in different internal and external capacity building training, such as “Introduction to Assessments in Humanitarian Emergencies” and “Introduction to World Vision’s Project Management Approach; Learning through Evaluation with Accountability Program (LEAP 3.0)". Next to such technical training related to project management aspects, I was also able to participate in training on thematic issues, such as WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene).

Apart from enriching my knowledge, the internship has truly been an unparalleled experience; and hopefully, a launch pad into a successful career. As such, I recommend an internship in an international organization like World Vision Germany for any students who are interested in gaining professional, development, and project work experience.
