Academic Achievements

Five IEE Members have been granted a doctorate.

On 15 July 2015, Alphonce Omolo from Kenia has been awarded the degree of a Doctor (Dr. phil.) at the Faculty for Philosophy and Educational Research at RUB in the field of Comparative Education. During his studies at RUB Alphonce Omolo was an associated member of the PhD Programme in International Development Studies (PhD IDS) and known as an active and thoughtful participant in course and cluster activities.
2014-08 OmoloHis thesis "Violence against Children in Kenya: Towards an Ecological Model of Risk Factors and Consequences, Responses and Projects" has been supervised by Prof. Dr. Christel Adick (RUB) and Prof. Dr. Annette Scheunpflug (Bamberg University).

2014-11 Fatima neuHaving successfully defended her PhD thesis on Thursday, 30 October 2014, Syeda Tamkeen Fatima from Pakistan was awarded the degree of a Philosophiae Doctor (Ph.D.). Her thesis on "Productivity and Wage Spillovers from Foreign Direct Investment: Evidence from Turkish Micro-Level Data" was supervised by Prof. em. Dr. Dieter Bender and Prof. Dr. Matthias Busse.


2014-11 ThuererIEE member Tobias Thürer who successfully defended his doctoral thesis on Tuesday, 28 October 2014, was awarded the degree of Doctor (Dr. rer. oec.) of the Faculty of Economics at the Ruhr-University Bochum. His dissertation dealt with "The Effect of Speculation with Agricultural Commodity Futures in the Event of Negative Production Shocks - A New Approach to Identify Price Bubbles on Commodity Markets". The thesis was supervised by Prof. em. Dr. Bender. The board of examiners also included Prof. Löwenstein and Prof. Karl.

Doktor StefanStefan Buchholz, a Corresponding Member of the IEE and new DAAD-Lecturer at the University of the Western Cape, was awarded the degree of Doctor (Dr. rer. soc.) of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the Ruhr-University Bochum. His dissertation on the "Dimensions and Determining Factors of HIV/AIDS-Related Stigmata in the Republic of South Africa – Results of an Empirical Survey Among Students of the Cape Town Metropolitan Area " was supervised by Prof. Voß and Prof. Lenz. The picture shows him after the successful defense on 28 November 2014.

RimkusThe former IEE staff member and editor of the IEE Newsletter, Marco Rimkus, was awarded the degree of a Doctor (Dr. rer. oec.) of the Faculty of Economics at the Ruhr-University Bochum after the successful defense of his thesis on the 2 December 2014. His dissertation is entitled "Global Food Security, Animal Welfare and Food Safety: A Monetary Evaluation in Developing Countries and Emerging Markets. (Welternährung, Nutztierschutz und Lebensmittelsicherheit: Eine monetäre Bewertung in Entwicklungs- und Schwellenländern)". The thesis was supervised by Prof. Löwenstein and Prof. Karl.
