New Faces

Meet our new research fellow Raffael Beier.
Beier
In August 2014 Raffael Beier joined the team of research fellows at the IEE. In fact, the young researcher already is a well-known face at the Institute since he has been working as a student assistant at the Institute from 2011 to 2013. At the end of 2013 he joined the PhD IDS programme. Raffael holds a B.Sc. in Geography which he obtained at the Ruhr-University of Bochum. Currently, he is about to finish his M.Sc. in Urban- and Regional Development Studies at the RUB - a course which also included a half year study period at the Université Joseph Fourier in Grenoble, France. His research interests include Housing and Urban Development, Attention Economy and Urban Policy and Migration in the Mediterranean area. His PhD thesis project entitled "Measuring Welfare Effects of Slum Eradication and Relocation Programmes – The Villes sans Bidonvilles Programme in Morocco" allows him to delve into some of these interests. Raffael also gave a first presentation and discussed his research project at the PhD Conference held at the Institute of Social Studies, The Hague, this year. You can read his conference report in the PhD IDS section of this newsletter. With his focus on a programme on slum eradication he also is new member of the Research Cluster 2 which focuses on the "Assessment of Development Interventions". Raffael's main tasks at the IEE will be to assist Anja Zorob in the coordination of the PhD IDS and Professor Wilhelm Löwenstein with his teaching obligations at the Faculty of Geography at the Ruhr-University.
