Cooperation with Afghanistan: Recent Achievements of Afghan Lecturers

In March 24 lecturers received the certificates of the Bachelor Upgrading Programme in Management and Economics. They have moved on to the Master level. Moreover, future Afghan PhD candidates have submitted promising research proposals.

Congratulations to 24 Afghan lecturers – the largest group yet – from the Universities of Nangarhar, Herat, Faryab, Samangan, Bamyan, Khost, Kunduz, Paktia, Kandahar, and Kabul, who completed the Bachelor Upgrading Programme in Management and Economics at the RUB. They received their certificates on 6 March 2015.
The group arrived about one year ago in Bochum, and the majority successfully passed examinations in at least six subjects of Management and Economics. Most of the participants are lecturers from newly founded universities in the provinces of Afghanistan, and thereby extend the reach of the established training programme. For the first time, lecturers coming from private universities were integrated, made possible by an agreement with the Afghan Ministry of Higher Education. The DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) funded the programme.

18 of the bachelor graduates are now joining the international Master's Programme in Management and Economics at the RUB. They study together with 19 other Master's students from Afghanistan, who already started the programme in August 2014. Since August 2014 the group has successfully accomplished four modules of the Master's programme and has attended German and English classes up to February 2015. Together with the former Bachelor upgrading students, they are currently continuing their studies.
The MSc programme consists of four semesters. Three semesters are dedicated to coursework in Bochum, followed by a four-month field research stay in Afghanistan. Afterwards, the participants will return to Bochum to write their master theses.

Future Afghan PhD candidates submitted research proposals

From October 2014 to March 2015, five more lecturers from the universities of Kabul, Nangarhar, and Herat in Afghanistan were in Bochum for a research stay. These five lecturers have already obtained their MSc degree from the RUB and have now moved on to the final stage in their academic careers. During their research stays, they developed research questions, reviewed literature, and prepared detailed research proposals. Currently, we are looking for supervisors for these PhD-projects. The candidates are expected to come back to Bochum during the second half of this year.
