Cooperation with Afghanistan: News from the Master's Programme, Afghan PhD Candidates and German-Afghan Friendship at the IEE

Sami Noor and Anne Siebert provide an update on the Afghanistan programme at the IEE.

This year, 100 years of German-Afghan Friendship are proudly celebrated in a series of festivities, cultural events, and official visits. The IEE also presents its partnership with Afghanistan, dating back to the very roots of the Institute and the study programme at the exhibition 'German-Afghan Relations'. The exhibition is organized by the Swiss Afghanistan Institute and will be presented in Kabul.
The year 2015 represents two highlights of the IEE's Afghanistan cooperation. In November 2015, we will welcome a group of five Afghan PhD candidates for the first time. All of them graduated from the MSc programme in the recent years. 2015 is also unique, as the highest number of Afghan lecturers (37) is currently studying in the Master's Program at the IEE. All students successfully graduated from the Bachelor Training in Management and Economics. Currently, they study together in the same modules.

19 students have been in the Master's programme since August 2014 (intake 2014-2016) and will finish their third semester at end of November. In December, after an intensive 16-month period of coursework, the lecturers from the Universities of Balkh, Faryab, Jozjan, Kabul, Kandahar, Khost, Nangarhar, and Paktia will leave Bochum for their field research period in their home country. They will be collecting data and conducting empirical research for their Master's theses.
In addition to this group, 18 Afghan lecturers joined the Master's programme directly after their graduation from the Bachelor training programme in March 2015. Noteworthy is that the 'younger' group of Master's students (intake 2015-2017) managed the direct transition from the Bachelor's to Master's level very well.

Ahsanullah Mohsen, one of these Afghan lecturers, shares his experiences with the Afghanistan programme and his impressions of Germany with us in this newsletter.
