Research Activities: International Workshop Organised by IEE Research Cluster 2

Members of IEE Research Cluster 2 devote an international workshop to discussions on Urban Governance and the UN Habitat III process.

On November 12, 2015, Research Cluster 2 held its first international workshop under the framework of Habitat III. The workshop was themed "Urban Governance in a Global Perspective – Contributions to the Habitat III Debate." Guest speaker Dr. Jeff Garmany from King's College London gave an introductory keynote lecture on social housing, urban governance, and (in)formal development in Brazil. This was followed by three short presentations by Mariana Vilmondes (IEE), Raffael Beier (IEE), and Himanshu Shekhar (University of Duisburg-Essen) on housing and urbanization strategies in India, South Africa, Brazil, and Morocco. The workshop ended with a discussion about the presentations and implications for Habitat III. The IEE is a registered stakeholder of the Habitat III process that has the aim to set up a new urban agenda in October 2016.

Upcoming Publications on National Housing Strategies

Additionally, Mariana Vilmondes and Raffael Beier will publish a joint paper on national housing strategies in Brazil, South Africa, and Morocco in the upcoming issue of the journal RaumPlanung, which focuses on "Globaler Süden: Internationale Stadtentwicklung" ("The global south: international urban development").

Regular Cluster Activities

Apart from providing the space and opportunity to host workshops and pursue joint publication projects the research clusters allow for mutual exchange among PhD students on their respective projects. In Cluster 2 the following PhD researchers presented their topics in four different cluster meetings over the last months: Charlotte Lülf, Mariana Vilmondes, Callistus Agbaam, Lungile Penxa and Eva Mihalik.
