Alumni Conference in November 2016 and Celebration of 50 years IEE

The IEE was successfully granted funding by the DAAD for an Alumni Conference, which will take place in Bochum from 9 to 11 November 2016. The topic of the conference will be „Doing Good with Business? – Corporate Social Responsibility, Social Entrepreneurship, and Fair Trade". The call for applications to the conference will be published soon on the IEE website.

Choosing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as the major subject of the conference not only reflects CSR as a topic of interest in the current development debate, but is also in line with current IEE research activities. The project "Political Authority in Transnational Governance Arrangements: Regulation through Public and Private Labour, Social and Environmental Standards in the Asian Textile and Apparel Industry", funded by the Mercator Research Centre Ruhr (MERCUR), and conducted together with the Institute for Development and Peace (INEF) at the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE), is one example. Research conducted in the context of the IEE-Research Cluster "Resource Use and Distribution" adds to this and has resulted in recent publications in the IEE Working Paper Series:
Hansen et al. (2016), Determining Minimum Compensation for Lost Farmland: a theory-based impact evaluation of a land grab in Sierra Leone,
Löwenstein et al. (2015), Do the Poor Benefit from Corporate Social Responsibility? A Theory-Based Impact Evaluation of Six Community-Based Water Projects in Sri Lanka).
The IEE is please to co-operate with some well-known partners for the upcoming conference. The Institute of Political Science (IfP), and the INEF at the UDE are the IEE's partners in the UA Ruhr Graduate Centre for Development Studies. The Master's Programme in International and Development Economics (MIDE) at HTW Berlin and the Master's Programme Small Enterprise Promotion and Training (SEPT) at Leipzig University hosted previous years' Alumni Conferences in which IEE Alumni participated. Like the IEE's MA in Development Management (MADM), MIDE and SEPT are supported by the DAAD-EPOS programme, which provides scholarships for participants of Development-Related Postgraduate Courses.
Alumni of all partners will be invited to apply for participation in the Alumni Conference via the respective websites soon. Details of the application procedure and available funding will also be made available.

50 years of IEE

One year after Ruhr-University Bochum celebrated its 50th anniversary, the IEE is turning 50 years old! In spring 1966, the institute was established as an interdisciplinary and central academic institution of the Ruhr-University Bochum with seven research sections, including national and international development policy, economics of education, economic geography and population geography, constitution and administration, and sociology of development.
Since its foundation, the IEE has followed an approach to research that aims at finding theory-based solutions for real-world development problems. The IEE has grown into an institution that produces quality research results based on the expertise of around 50 researchers and PhD students with backgrounds in economics, geography, law, political science, and sociology, organized in three research clusters: Regional Integration, Globalisation, and Governance; The Effectiveness of Interventions and Policies for Development: Social, Political and Legal Science Perspectives; and Resource Use and Distribution.
The anniversary celebration is planned to take place on the eve of the Alumni Conference, on 8th November 2016. More news on this event will follow via the IEE website shortly.
