In the context of his Joint PhD programme, Raffael Beier was on a research stay at the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS), in the Hague, the Netherlands, from 1 June to 1 July.

As part of the MADM curriculum, Ruth Knoblich gave the course "Institutions and Development" at the University of the Western Cape, Belville, Cape Town, South Africa, from 3 to 27 June.

Jasmin Fritzsche attended the "Scholars at Risk" Congress, which took place from 7 to 8 June at McGill University, Montreal, Canada.

Robin Pass attended the Meeting of Partners of the Alumni Portal Germany, which was held at GIZ premises in Berlin from 8 to 9 June.

From 8 to 9 June, Markus Kaltenborn attended the meeting of the Working Group on Implementation and Internationalization of the German Partnership for Sustainable Textile in Frankfurt/Main, Germany.

Jasmin Fritzsche held a presentation on the status of Palestinian-Syrian refugees under international refugee law and regional asylum polices in Jordan, Lebanon and Egypt at the ISA/IPSA/ECPR/APSA Conference on 'Human Rights in an Age of Ambiguity', which was held from 12 to 16 June at the Lincoln Center Campus of Fordham University, New York, USA.

In the context of the MERCUR project on labour regulation in the textile and apparel industry, Johannes Norpoth attended a seminar on "Liability of Social Auditors" organized by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation and the European Center on Constitutional and Human Rights, and held on 16 June at the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in Berlin.

Annika Engelbert co-organized an event entitled "First Interdisciplinary Forum: How to Research Corruption", which took place at the Vrije University Amsterdam, the Netherlands, from 17 to 18 June. A report on the event is provided in this article.

In the context of the Urban Food Plus project, Nicole Dittrich, Tobias Thürer, and Marc Hansen visited Bamenda, Cameroon, from 20 June to 1 July. The visit served to establish contacts with future partners of the project in Cameroon.

From 21 to 25 June, Britta Niklas attended the 10th Annual Conference of the American Association of Wine Economists held at Bordeaux, France. She gave a presentation on the "Impact of Annual Weather Changes on Yields and the Distribution of Grape Varieties in Different Wine Regions of South Africa", which is available online.

Jasmin Fritzsche attended the workshop "Rethinking Research in/on Palestine", held at the Institut für internationale Entwicklung (Institute of International Development) at the University of Vienna, Austria, from 24 to 25 June.

From 4 to 5 July, Nicole Dittrich and Britta Niklas attended the Erasmus + Forum on International Partnerships held in Cologne, Germany.

Martina Shakya attended the 12th European IFSA Symposium, held at Harper Adams University, Newport, United Kingdom, from 12 to 15 July. She presented a poster on "Evaluating Economic Implications of Agricultural Innovations. A Theory-Based Impact Assessment of Biochar as a Soil Amendment and Improved Wastewater Irrigation in West African Cities," co-authored with her Urban Food Plus colleagues Wilhelm Löwenstein, Marc Hansen, Lesley Hope and Samuel Donkoh.

Raffael Beier attended the ISA RC21 Conference, themed "The Transgressive City" and held at El Colegio de Mexico, Mexico City, from 20 to 28 July. He participated in the Panel on "Transgressive Urbanisms in the Middle East".

Maruf Lutfur submitted and discussed a paper entitled "How do we belong? Migration from rural Bangladesh to the Gulf" at the 24th European Conference on South Asian Studies (ECSAS), which was held at the University of Warsaw, Poland, from 27 to 30 July.

From 4 July to 6 August, Jasmin Fritzsche attended the International Law Summer Course at Al Haq Center for Applied International Law in Ramallah, Palestine.

Stefan Buchholz and Anne Siebert gave the course "Social Science Perspective on Development" for the MADM students at University of the Western Cape, Belville, Cape Town South Africa, from 1 to 12 August 2016.

Laura Hoffmann attended the seminar on "The Assyrians of Nimrud and Nineveh: Lost But Not Forgotten", held at the Ashmolean Museum, University of Oxford, on 10 August.

From 18 to 26 August, Annika Engelbert attended a PhD Course on the "Effects of Lawfare: Courts and Law as Battlegrounds for Social Change", which was held at the Centre on Law & Social Transformation, University of Bergen, Norway.

Anne Siebert attended the World Nutrition Congress 2016 from 30 August to 1 September 2016 at the University of the Western Cape in Cape Town, South Africa, and gave the presentation "Promoting sustainable livelihoods and healthy nutrition: The role of community-driven gardening initiatives in urban food systems".

From 30 August to 3 September, Raffael Beier visited the Royal Geographical Society (RGS) in London to give a presentation on "Urban Policy after the 'Arab Spring'" at the RGS's Annual International Conference.

In the context of the Urban Food Plus research project, Christina Seeger, Marc Hansen, and student assistant Melanie Chrobok visited Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, for a research stay from 30 August to 9 September.

From 4 to 16 September, Wilhelm Löwenstein, Gabriele Bäcker, and Robin Pass visited Hanoi, Vietnam for a DAAD-AGEP workshop on "Reintegration into the Domestic Job Market" and subsequent talks with local partners. Further information about this event is provided in this article by Robin Pass.

Markus Kaltenborn gave a presentation on "Social Protection in Cases of Employment Injury – International Legal Standards" at the GIZ Symposium on "Retreat on Health, Social Protection and Inclusion - Care, Share, Protect: Essentials of Social Development", which took place from 8 to 9 September in Bad Neuenahr, Germany.

Johannes Norpoth and Nina Geerkens attended a meeting of the Working Group on Implementation and Internationalization of the German Partnership for Sustainable Textiles, which was held in Berlin from 8 to 9 September.

On 9 September, Martina Shakya attended the Alumni Conference of the German Development Institute (GDI) in Bonn and was a panelist in a "Three-Generation-Panel" presenting alumni of GDI's postgraduate training programme.

In the context of the MADM summer school, MADM coordinator Tobias Thürer, research fellow Julien Lebourg, administrative staff members Tania de Giorgio and Sophie Skiba, and student assistant Niels Keulertz visited Berlin from 11 to 14 September together with MADM students from Bochum and Cape Town. Jasmin Fritzsche, Loubna Abi Khalil, and Raffael Beier chaired a panel on 'The regional politics of forced displacement in the Middle East' at the 2016 Conference of the Development Studies Association, held between 13 and 14 September, and hosted by the Oxford Department of International Development (ODID) at the University of Oxford. Markus Kaltenborn gave a presentation on "Overcoming Extreme Poverty by Social Protection Floors – Approaches to Closing the Rights Gap" at the European Law & Development Research Conference, which was held from 14 to 16 September in Ostende, Belgium.

Farah Asna Ashari presented a paper on "Water Conservation Program and Practice in Irrigated Agriculture in Iran: A Case Study of Lake Urmia Basin" at the Tropentag 2016, which took place in Vienna, Austria, from 18 to 21 September.

Maruf Lutfur attended a summer school programme themed "Protest and Social Movements in Historical and Contemporary Perspectives". The summer school was organized by the Institute for Social Movements, Ruhr University Bochum, Germany, from 19 to 23 September.

Martina Shakya presented a paper on "Determining Minimum Compensation for Lost Farmland: A Theory-based Impact Evaluation of a Land Grab in Sierra Leone" at the workshop "Civilizing Resource Investments and Extractive Industries. Societal Negotiations and the Role of Law". The workshop took place at the Center for Development Research, Bonn University, from 22 to 23 September.

In the context of the German-Arab Joint PhD Programme, the IEE, together with the Lebanese American University (LAU), organised the interdisciplinary Autumn School 'Forced Displacement and Regional Politics in the Middle East. IEE's PhD students, Assem Abi Ali, Loubna Abi Khalil, Mohammad Al-Asadi, Salam Alhaj Hassan, Afsin Evren, Jasmin Fritzsche, Laura Hofmann, and Ihsan Madbouh took part in the programme at LAU's campus in Byblos and Beirut from 3 to 12 October. From 6 to 8 October, Raffael Beier and Britta Holzberg attended the International Congress for Contemporary Studies on the Middle East organized by the Deutsche Arbeitsgemeinschaft Vorderer Orient (DAVO) Conference, and held at the University of Tübingen, Germany.

Anne Siebert
attended the Food Studies Conference 2016 from 12 to 13 October 2016 at the University of California at Berkeley, USA, and gave the presentation "Urban Agriculture and Food Sovereignty: The Role of Local Food Movements in Urban Food Policies. A Case Study of George, South Africa".

Markus Kaltenborn and Annika Engelbert attended the Conferenz on "Law and Development: From the Global South Perspectives", which was held from 21 to 22 October at the Law and Development Institute, University Austral, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Markus Kaltenborn gave a presentation on "SDG 1 and the Rule of Law". Annika presented a paper on "Public Procurement Law and Anti-Corruption in Sub-Saharan Africa".

On 27 October, Laura Hoffmann attended the seminar "Enforcing the Right to Cultural Heritage", held at the British Institute of International and Comparative Law in London.

Maruf Lutfur
gave a presentation on "Stories of Returned Migrants: Renegotiating the sense of Belonging: Migration from Bangladesh to the Gulf" at the Fourth Conference on Bengal Related Studies for Students and Young Scholars, which was held at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Germany, from 28 to 30 October.

In the context of the MERCUR project on regulation of labour standards in the textile and apparel industry, Nina Geerkens attended the Tchibo Dialogue Event entitled "Mit Kraft aus der Nische – Wieviel Pflicht braucht / verträgt Nachhaltigkeit? (How much obligation does sustainability need/tolerate?)". The event was held in Hamburg, Germany, on 3 November.

In the context of the Urban Food Plus research project, Christina Seeger stayed from 3 to 11 November in Tamale, Ghana, to collect further data.

co-organized a conference on "Law for Development: Strengthening Social Protection Systems in Africa", together with Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development. The event was held on 10 and 11 November in Berlin. Markus Kaltenborn and

On 18 November Markus Kaltenborn and Nina Geerkens attended the meeting of the Working Group on Implementation and Internationalization of the German Partnership for Sustainable Textiles, which was held in Berlin.

From 28 November to 2 December, Gabriele Bäcker and Christiane Wüllner (RUB Research School) visited the University of Stellenbosch and the University of the Western Cape, South Africa, in the context of the Erasmus + Project "Enhancing Postgraduate Education".

This Winter Semester 2016/17, Ruth Knoblich will lecture a seminar called "Wissen als Ware - Geistige Eigentumsrechte in der globalen politischen Ökonomie (Knowledge as a Private Good - Intellectual Property Rights in the Global Political Economy)" at the Institute of Political Science and Sociology, Bonn University.
