External activities of IEE members.

From November 2016 to July 2017, PhD IDS student, Mohammad Al Asadi, participated in the Accompanying Programme Leadership for Syria at Konstanz University, Germany. This is a blended learning programme comprising two terms of e-learning and three face-to-face workshops.

IEE Director, Markus Kaltenborn, co-organized an International Conference on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Human Rights with the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, and the Centre for Human Rights Erlangen-Nürnberg (CHREN) from the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, which was held on the premises of the Ministry in Bonn from 6 to 7 June. IEE Managing, Director Wilhelm Löwenstein, held a session on SDG 8. IEE members, Johannes Norpoth and Annika Engelbert, also attended the conference. We shared a short report on the conference in our previous newsletter.

In the context of the BMBF-funded research project, “Urban Food Plus”, Nicole Dittrich, Tobias Thürer, and Henrike Roth visited Bamenda, Cameroon, in order to gather data for the project and extend the cooperation with project partners in the country. While Nicole Dittrich and Tobias Thürer returned after about two weeks, Henrike Roth stayed from 6 June to 6 August to complete the field research. In the context of the MERCUR research project on the garment and textile industry, Johannes Norpoth attended a meeting of a Working Group of the German Partnership for Sustainable Textiles held at the GIZ in Berlin on 8 and 9 June.

PhD IDS student, Amr Khafagy, presented a paper entitled “Regulation, Supervision and Deposit Insurance for Financial Cooperatives: A Review” at the 8th International Workshop on Cooperative Finance and Sustainable Development, held in Trento, Italy, from 15 to16 June.

On 16 June, Anne Siebert visited the International Institute for Social Studies in The Hague, Netherlands to give a presentation in a seminar on “Politics of Agrarian Transformation".

Martina Shakya, Tobias Thürer, Christina Seeger, and Jan Wüstenfeld presented on their research activities in the context of the Urban Food Plus project at the Urban Food Plus Summer School held at the University of Göttingen, Germany from 21 to 23 June.

From 27 to 28 June, Anne Siebert attended a seminar on “German Development Policy in Practice” at the Gustav-Stresemann-Institute in Bonn.

Elkhan Richard Sadik-Zada attended the 23rd Annual Conference of the European Association of Environmental and Energy Economists from 29 June to 2 July 2017 in Athens, Greece. At the conference he presented a paper on "Hubbertian Revenue Distribution and a Dynamic Model of the Rent-Seeking Incentive".

From 28 June to 2 July, Britta Niklas attended the Annual Conference of the American Association of Wine Economists, held at the University of Padua, Italy. At the conference, she presented a paper on “Annual Weather Changes and Wine Prices of German Wines – a hedonic pricing model”.

From 28 June to 2 July, Raffael Beier visited the University of Basel, Switzerland for the 7th European Conference on African Studies (ECAS 2017), and presented the paper "'The house is nice, but ...' - Shantytown Resettlement through Small-Scale Private Construction in Casablanca, Morocco".

Elkhan Richard Sadik-Zada attended the International Economic Organization Roundtable on the Economics of Religion at McGrath Centre at St Catherine's College, Cambridge, UK.

On 13 July, Sascha Rosenberger participated in the "First Paraguayan Congress of Social Sciences ", which was organized to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Latin American Social Science Council. At the Congress, Sascha presented a paper on “ICT Appropriation in Paraguay”.

In the context of his joint PhD project with the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS), Raffael Beier was based at ISS in The Hague, Netherlands, from 17 July to 8 September for a research stay.

In the context of the Urban Food Plus research project, Christina Seeger visited Tamale, Ghana for field research from 1 August to 4 October.

PhD IDS student, Darina Pellowska, participated in a PhD course on “Critical Perspectives on NGOs in Development”, held at the Centre for Development and the Environment in Oslo, Norway, from 16 to 18 August. During the course, she gave a presentation entitled “Towards Conceptualizing NGO-belligerent Inter-relations”.

Elkhan Richard Sadik-Zada attended the EADI NORDIC 2017 Conference from 19 August to 21 August 2017 in Bergen, Norway. At the conference he presented a paper on the "Nonrenewable Resource Rents and Tax Base Erosion in the Labor Surplus Economies".

PhD IDS student, Amr Khafagy, attended the 6th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting on Economic Sciences, held in in Lindau, Germany, from 22 to 26 August.

Raffael Beier attended the 13th European Sociological Association (ESA) Conference, held from 29 August to 1 September at Panteion University of Sociological and Political Science and Harokopio University in Athens, Greece. He presented the paper "From the City to the Sahara – Shantytown Resettlement and the Right to the City in Casablanca".

PhD IDS student, Mohammad Al Asadi, attended the conference, “From the Brandt Commission to the 2030 Agenda: 40 years of common efforts for a peaceful, just, and sustainable world”, which was organized by the German Foreign Minister and the Global Diplomacy Lab, held at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities on 31 August.

In the context of her joint PhD project with the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS), Britta Holzberg visited the ISS in The Hague, Netherlands on 4 September to present and defend her dissertation design. Johannes Norpoth joined the dissertation design seminar as a PhD representative.

From 11 to 13 September, Raffael Beier attended the 2017 RC21 Conference held at Leeds University, Leeds, United Kingdom, and presented "Starting from Zero: Social Reconfigurations and Resettlement at the Fringes of Casablanca, Morocco”.

Robin Pass organized a DAAD Alumni Workshop, “Challenges of Urbanization”, held from 14 to 15 September in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Apart from Robin Pass, IEE Executive Director Gabriele Bäcker also took part in the workshop. In this newsletter, MADM alumna and workshop participant, Anna Nascimiento, shares some impressions from the event.

Elkhan Richard Sadik-Zada attended the 4th Annual Conference of the French Association of Environmental and Energy Economists from 12 to 14 September 2017 in Nancy, France, and presented a paper on "A Paradox of the Decaying Rentier State".

On 13 September, Anne Siebert participated in the Working Group “World Food (Welternährung)” at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development in Bonn.

Raffael Beier atttended the 33rd German Orientalists‘ Day (Orientalistentag), held at the Friedrich-Schiller-University, Jena, Germany from 18 to 20 September, and presented the paper "Consequences of Branding 'Slum-Free' - Experience from Casablanca".

PhD IDS student, Callistus Agbaam, presented a research poster at the International Conference on Sustainable Development, held at Columbia University, New York from 18 to 19 September.

Nicole Dittrich joined the Annual Interdisciplinary Conference on Research on Tropical and Sub-Tropical Agriculture, Natural Resource Management and Rural Development; held in Bonn from 20 to 22 September.

Markus Kaltenborn participated in the "Law and Development Research Conference: A View from the Global South" held at the University of Antwerp, Belgium, from 20 to 22 September.

From 21 to 22 September, Raffael Beier participated in the Workshop, "Infrastructure and the Making of Urban Space: Critical Approaches", held at the Leibniz Center for Modern Oriental Studies in Berlin. He presented his work on "Pictures of Contrast – Casablanca’s Tramway between Urban World-Class and the Right to the City".

On 24 September, Anne Siebert gave a presentation at the “Intercultural public dialogue on development policy commitment and SDGs”, organised by Deutsch Afrika Ruhr Forum (DARF e.V.) at Falkenheim in Bochum.

On the 28th of September 2017 Elkhan Richard Sadik-Zada started his position as a visiting research fellow at the Economics Faculty, Cambridge University, hosted by Dr. Kamiar Mohaddes.

In the context of the German Arab Joint PhD Programme, Jasmin Fritzsche co-organized a PhD Workshop at the Lebanese American University, Beirut, Lebanon, from 2 to 6 October. Apart from Jasmin Fritzsche, Wilhelm Löwenstein, Raffael Beier, Salam Alhaj Hasan, Mohamed Alasadi, Laura Hofmann, Loubna Abi Khalil, Assem Abi Ali, Eva Gerharz, Christoph Hartmann, Tobias Debiel, Pierre Thielbörger, and Hans-Joachim Heintze participated in the workshop. Anne Siebert joined a Colloquium on Agrarian Change, held at the International Institute of Social Studies, The Hague, Netherlands, from 4 to 9 October.

PhD IDS student, Darina Pellowska, attended the International Conference on “Dirty Peace? The Political Economy of Peacebuilding”, held on 19 October at the Bonn International Center for Conversion (BICC) in Bonn, Germany.

On 25 October PhD IDS student, Sascha Rosenberger, led a discussion panel on "ICT Appropriation in Paraguay and Latin America". The panel was organized by Paraguay Educa [Paraguay Educates - NGO], Juntos por la Educación [Together for Education - NGO], and the Paraguayan National Council for Science and Technology (CONACYT).

Elkhan Richard Sadik-Zada attended a workshop entitled "New Political Economy Perspectives of the Middle East" from 27 to 29 October 2017 in Oxford, UK, and presented a paper on "Intersectoral Elasticity Model and Elite Dynamics in the Petroleum-Exporting MENA-States".

Markus Kaltenborn attended a conference organized by the German Development Institute and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Bonn, Germany, against the backdrop of the parallel Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change from 4 to 5 November. The conference was themed „Climate Action and Human Wellbeing at a Crossroads: Historical Transformation or Backlash?”.

Elkhan Richard Sadik-Zada attended the AIQUAV CONFERENZA 2017 "Qualità della vita e Sostenibilità” from 30 November to 2 December in Florence, Italy, and presented a joint paper with Mattia Ferrari on "Is Waste-to-Energy an Effective Strategy to Increase the Resource Efficiency of the Economy? A Panel Data Approach to Circular Economy in the EU".

A larger group of IEE members visited Cape Town, South Africa for a series of events:
- The oral exams and graduation of the Cape Town group of the current MADM intake, involving Wilhelm Löwenstein, Gabriele Bäcker, Tobias Thürer, Britta Niklas, Ruth Knoblich, and Anne Siebert as examiners.
- The Alumni-Conference of the DAAD African Excellence Centres from 26 November to 1 December, which was organized by the South African-German Centre for Development Research and the IEE, themed “Tackling the root causes of displacement in Sub Sahara Africa”. Britta Niklas, Gabriele Bäcker, Wilhelm Löwenstein, Christina Seeger, and Tobias Thürer were involved in the Conference.
- The 3rd International Conference on “Global Food Security - On Global Challenges, Local Solutions and Connected Pathways” from 3 to 6 December, during which Christina Seeger and Carla Swertz presented their research in the context of the Urban Food Plus research project. Additionally, Christina Seeger presented a poster, jointly prepared with Elkhan Richard Sadik-Zada and Wilhelm Löwenstein, with the title "EU Action on Nutrition and its Discontents", and Anne Siebert presented a poster on her PhD topic.
