External Activities of IEE Members

From 31 May to 11 June, Nicole Dittrich taught the course “Public Sector Reforms” at the University of Western Cape, Cape Town, South Africa.


Raffael Beier presented at the 14. Bundeskonferenz der Kommunalen Entwicklungspolitik, held from 6 June to 8 June in Lübeck, Germany.


Britta Niklas presented two papers at Annual Conference of the AAWE. The conference was held at the Cornell University from 7 June to 18 June, Ithaca, USA.


Our research fellow Ruth Knoblich was in South Africa from 6 June to 15 July. There, she taught the course “Institutions and Developments” at the University of Western Cape and continued here field research.

 
Tobias Thürer attended the conference "5th International Climate Change Adaptation Conference". The conference took place in Cape Town, South Africa from the 16 June to 18 June 2018.


Raffael Beier presented at ESA RN 37 III. Midterm Conference, "Inequality and uncertainty: current challenges for cities" in Madrid. The National Distance Education University (UNED) in Madrid, Spain hosted the conference from 26 June to 30 June.


Prof. Dr. Löwenstein and Dr. Elkhan Sadik-Zada presented at the ECOMOD conference that took place from 3 July to 6 July at the Universita Ca'Foscari Venezia, Italy. Prof. Löwenstein presented on the topic “Labour Market Failure, Capital Accumulation, Growth and Poverty Dynamics in Partially Formalised Economies: Why Developing Countries’ Growth Patterns are Different”. Dr. Elkan Sadik-Zada’s presentation had the title “Autocratic Bargaining and the Speed of Structural Change in the Petroleum Exporting Labor Surplus Economies”.


On 5 July, Christina Seeger, Nicole Dittrich and Tobias Thürer participated in the meeting of the Urban Food Plus research consortium held at the University of Göttingen, Germany.


Anne Siebert participated in the workshop "Consuming Urban Poverty" at the University of Cape Town (UCT) from 8 July to 17 July 2018, Cape Town, South Africa.


On 12 July, Johannes Norpoth attended the „Arbeitstreffen des Bündnisses für nachhaltige Textilien“ in Cologne, Germany.


From 18 July to 22 July Johannes Norpoth particpated in the workshop „Internationales Abkommen zu Unternehmen und Menchenrechte“ in Berlin. The Humboldt University Berlin hosted the workshop.


On 23 July Britta Niklas attended the DAAD workshop “DAAD Afirican Excellence Centers” in Bonn, Germany.


The course “Social Science Perspectives on Development“ was taught by Anne Siebert at the University of Western Cape from 27 July to 11 August, Cape Town, South Africa.


Our research Jasmin Fritzsche-El Shewy was on field research from 30 July to 4 August in Berlin to meet with Palestine refugees from Syria.


During the summer school Tania De Giorgio, Sevilay Recber, Tobias Thürer and Julien Lebourg together with our 31 MADM students spend four days in Berlin, to get to know our beautiful capital. One of the highlights was a guided visit to the Bundestag. The trip took place from 5 September to the 8 September.


Raffael Beier presented at the interdisciplinary workshop "Localizing the Sustainable Development Agenda: Städte als als Schlüssel für eine nachhaltige Entwicklung?” The conference was hosted by the Universität Potsdam from 6 September to 8 September, Potsdam, Germany.


From 18 September to 19 September, the Tropentage 2018 took place in Gent, Belgium. There Elkhan Sadik-Zada presented a poster with the title “Devco Nutrition Commitments and its Dicontents”.

From 25 September to 26 September, Christina Seeger attended the workshop "Horizont 2020 für Antragstellende" in Berlin.


In the context of the Urban Food Plus Project, Nicole Dittrich (3 - 24 October) and Christina Seeger (3 October to 25 November) spent a field research period in Bamako, Mali.


Raffael Beier presented his research with the title "Worlding Cities in the Middle East and North Africa" at DAVO 2018 Conference in Frankfurt, Germany. The DAVO 2018 took place at the Goethe-Universität Frankfurt, Germany from 4 October to 6 October 2018.  


From 7 October to 31 October, Raffael Beier stayed at the International Institute of Social Studies, The Hague, Netherlands, for a research stay in the context of the Joint PhD Programme.


From 10 October to 14 October, Britta Niklas participated the 9th Network Meeting of Centres of African Excellence at the Humbolt Universität Berlin, Germany.


Our research follow Ruth Knoblich spends a research period in South Africa. From 15 October to 31 October, she visits relevant partners in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Pretoria.


Anne Siebert attended the meeting "Urban Food Systems for Healthier Diets, Nutrition, and Health" that took part from 21 October to 22 October in The Hague, Netherlands.


Prof. Dr. Löwenstein, on 22 October, participated in the workshop “H2020 Food Security” in The Hague, Netherlands.
