The library of the IEE is a reference library. Books and journals can be taken out for a short while for copying purposes, but during the semester terms lending is only possible for weekends or overnight. During the holidays, a longer lending period is possible. There are working places within the library. The institute's library is open to everyone interested in developing studies, so people and institutions do not need to belong to the Ruhr University Bochum to use the library.
The library can be closed for half to one hour for lunch breaks;
from Monday to Thursday it's usually opened longer than 16:00 h.
During the cooperation between the University of Kabul and the Universities of Bochum, Bonn and Cologne, the library's titles about and from Afghanistan increased so much that they were taken out of the normal library and the German Afghanistan Archive was founded.
The Afghanistan Archive is one of the biggest collections of literature about and from Afghanistan in Germany. It contains monographs, anthologies, statistics, maps, journals and newspapers as well as many unspecific titles and newspaper clips about Afghanistan.
Contrary to the institute library, the Afghanistan Archive can't be accessed by the users themselves. It is strictly a reference library.
Since January 1994, the IEE library has been participating in the Depository Library Programme of the Asian Development Bank.
Our acquisitions are included in the Online Catalog of the Ruhr University (OPAC) from 1997 on; acquisitions before that year are only searchable via our card catalogs.
