Representatives of the DRD Meet Cooperation Partners in Zomba, Malawi

In the framework of the cooperation project with the University of Malawi, representatives of the Development Research Division of the South African-German Centre for Development Research and Criminal Justice visited the Chancellor College in Zomba, Malawi on October 3, 2010. Both parties agreed that the already well established cooperation arrangements need to be expanded and intensified in the near future.

PhD Student Organizes Panel at Next International Studies Conference in Montreal

IEE's PhD student Jan-Frederik Kremer and Maximilian Mayer, research fellow at the Center for Global Studies, University of Bonn, successfully passed the review-process for the next yearly conference of the International Studies Association (ISA) with their panel proposal and paper contributions. Together they will chair the panel "Global Power Shift: Theoretical Perspectives and Approaches" at the most renowned conference for international politics and international relations in the U.S. and Canada. The panel will contain paper presentations from high ranking scholars coming from China, Turkey, the U.S., and Germany.

IEE Member at International Uplands Symposium, Hanoi

2010-07 Shakya IEE staff member Dr. Martina Shakya participated in the international symposium "Sustainable Land Use and Rural Development in Mountainous Regions of Southeast Asia". The conference, which was organized by the Uplands Program (SFB 564) of Hohenheim University and Hanoi University of Agriculture, took place in Hanoi from 21-23 July 2010. At the symposium, Dr. Shakya presented a paper on "The impact of non-farm economic activities on risk and vulnerability in remote mountain regions: The case of tourism".

It is difficult to describe life in South Africa during the World Cup. The official slogan 'feel it, it is here' captures it all. You can feel it everywhere. The newspapers are full of World Cup articles and opadds. There is no shop, restaurant and street without World Cup branding. I had a good laugh when I read Peter Davis' "Open letter to our foreign media friends". It is hilarious how he addressed journalists who before the World Cup saw a civil war coming upon South Africa and painting a picture of tourists being robbed and mugged at every corner. Reconciling he states at the end to just get out there and experience what is happening.

The IEE Welcomes a New Intake of MADM Students from around the World

Dr. Gabriele Baecker, Executive Director of the IEE, officially opened the new Master of Arts in Development Management (MA DM) intake in Cape Town on May 3, 2010. The Master of Arts in Development Management intake consists of nineteen students from twelve countries around the world. Four students of the current intake receive a scholarship from the South African-German Centre for Development Research and Criminal Justice.
