Two members of the IEE PhD program, Abate Mekuriaw and Farah Asna Ashari, participated in the international workshop on "Reverse Degradation by Innovation - New Pathways of Sustainable Natural Resource Management" organized by the Right Livelihoods College at the Center for Development Research (ZEF) in Bonn from May 30 – June 1, 2011.

Nepal Conference

IEE research fellow Dr Martina Shakya was an invited speaker at the annual conference of the German Nepal Friendship Association (DNG e.V.), which took place on 28 May 2011 at the Gustav-Stresemann-Institut in Bonn. In her presentation on "New tourism products in Nepal", she stressed the importance of diversifying Nepal's tourism offer, in order to develop new market segments and to spread the economic benefits of tourism.

Academic Co-operation with the UNIMA in Action

As one of the first measures of the new Agreement on Academic Co-operation with the University of Malawi, Steven Dunga - a PhD student, and Davies Luhanga, Ekari Chauluka, Atamandike Chingwanda and Harry Kamdima - 4 Master students of the Economics Department of the Chancellor College, are taking part in the "Project Cycle Management Module" and two other modules, offered at the Development Research Division of the Centre at the University of the Western Cape. Whereas Steven Dunga is staying for a period of 6 weeks, the 4 Master students received scholarships for a period of 3 months.

Agreement on Academic Co-operation with the UNIMA Was Signed!

One of the goals of the Development Research Division of the South African-German Centre for Development Research and Criminal Justice is to establish new co-operations with universities in Sub-Sahara Africa outside South Africa itself for strengthening the regional impact of the centre activities.

DAAD Network Meeting in Cape Town

From 26 - 30 January 2011, the South African - German Centre for Development Research and Criminal Justice hosted the network meeting of the DAAD centres of excellence. On 27 January 2011, the opening ceremony of the meeting took place on UWC campus. Speakers were, inter alia, Mrs. Naledi Grace Mandisa Pandor, Minister of Science and Technology, Government of South Africa. As part of the network meeting PhD scholarship holders of the centres of excellence presented their research projects on Wednesday, 26 January.

On October 07th, 2010, the South African - German Centre of Development Research and the University of Zimbabwe held a workshop on perspectives on aid effectiveness in Harare, Zimbabwe. Over forty participants from governmental and non-governmental organizations discussed different views on aid effectiveness.

International Tourism Conference in Oman

IEE research fellow Dr. Martina Shakya attended the 4th International Conference on Responsible Tourism in Destinations in Muscat from 10-12 October 2010 as a speaker and panelist. During a session on "Tourism, Livelihoods, Local Economic Development and Human Resources," Martina spoke about the links between tourism, rural development and human capital, drawing on her research results from Nepal.

Representatives of the DRD Meet Cooperation Partners in Zomba, Malawi

In the framework of the cooperation project with the University of Malawi, representatives of the Development Research Division of the South African-German Centre for Development Research and Criminal Justice visited the Chancellor College in Zomba, Malawi on October 3, 2010. Both parties agreed that the already well established cooperation arrangements need to be expanded and intensified in the near future.
