Iliso Youth Choir in Bochum: moving voices and performances

2014-10 IlisoYouthChoir-01

During the last week of September, several musical performances of the Iliso Youth Choir from Khayelitsha, Cape Town electrified the audience in Bochum. For most of the young people it was the first time abroad. Vivian Zilo, the founder of Iliso Care Society, accompanied the group. Besides their highly moving performances, the choir members gave an insight into life in a township and introduced the activities of the Iliso Care Society.

Each day was packed with a variety of activities: including intercultural workshops, class participation in schools, visits of radio shows and many interviews. There was no day without singing and dancing. At the Day of Song around 3.000 people listened to the choir. Another highlight during their free time was the soccer match of VfL Bochum vs. Fortuna Düsseldorf in the football stadium in Bochum.

On behalf of the IEE, the Deutsch Afrika Ruhr Forum (DARF e.V.) and the choir we would like to say thank you to everyone who supported the project, and those who gave donations for the ongoing projects of the Iliso Care Society in Cape Town. The project would not have been possible without the generous funding of Goethe Institut e.V., Stiftung für Umwelt und Entwicklung NRW, International Office, AStA RUB and AKAFÖ.
