The IEE Newsletter is a multi-purpose instrument, addressed to different target groups: It keeps actual and potential partners up to date with our multifaceted development activities. It is a platform to present some of our results in development research. Finally, it keeps links to our “AlumnIEEs”, members of the IEE alumni association. To enable the newsletter to serve all these purposes, we decided to publish it in English. We hope you will not only find the newsletter informative, but feel inspired to get in contact with the IEE, commenting on our work or even seeing opportunities to cooperate with us.

New Book Co-Edited By IEE PhD Fellow
PowerInThe21stCentury
IEE's PhD fellow Jan-Frederik Kremer co-edited the book "Power in the 21st Century. International Security and International Political Economy in a Changing World" which is published by Springer and is set up to become a significant contribution to the study of power in International Relations (IR).
In the book, scholars from the fields of international relations, international political economy, economics and security studies not only explore current theoretical debates on 'power' and 'power shifts' among entities, but also provide fresh insights into relevant aspects of international power in the 21st century. Among the authors are Benjamin J. Cohen (UCSB), Stefan Schirm (RUB) and  Andrew O’Neil (Griffith University). John G. Ikenberry (Princeton University) was a member of the international advisory board. The book will be in stores in early April.

New IEE Working Paper

192 - Katja Bender: Health Financing Mechanisms, Access to Health and Economic Growth

The paper analyzes the comparative effects of alternative health financing mechanisms on economic growth within a two-sector model with human capital. The transitional growth effects of a social insurance system are stronger than those of an out-of-pocket payment system. A private health insurance system ranks 'in between'. If physical capital relative to health is abundant, investments in health have stronger growth effects, which points to the relevance of health investments in particular for developing countries. The relative advantage of a health financing system in the long run depends on the relative amount of investment in health within each system.

The working paper can be downloaded here.
