The African Excellence Centre at UWC in Cape Town aims to prepare the next generation of leaders to tackle economic, social, and political challenges through cooperative Masters and PhD programmes. The centre implements its objectives through joint research, teaching, and mentoring in programmes such as the MA in Development Management (IEE), Masters in Development Studies (UWC), Master in Public Administration (MPA) programme (UWC), and PhD in Development Studies and Public Policy. The Centre awarded scholarships to outstanding applicants from Sub-Saharan Africa, offering soft skills training, German language courses, summer schools, and academic conferences to foster cooperative research and education.

The South African-German Centre for Development Research has been established in 2008 and by now we are proud to have about 380 graduates from the different MA and PhD Programms offered at our Centre. More than 100 of these graduates had been financed by a DAAD scholarship and you can find them in our Alumni database.

Until the end of 2023, SA-GER CDR has been supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) as part of the African Excellence Programme which has been funded by the German Federal Foreign Office.

About

Objectives:

The course offerings at Ruhr-University Bochum and the University of the Western Cape are sourced from the disciplines of economics and social sciences (particularly macroeconomics and political science) and the administrative sciences. The course programme is supplemented by substantial inputs from the fields of project management and empirical social research. The programmes are theory-based but also have a strong empirical focus. Regional case studies are intended to provide scope for analysis from both the macro and micro perspective:

  • Characteristics and causes of growth deficits and unequal resource distribution in developing countries as well as strategic approaches and flanking socio-political measures for growth and the reduction of poverty,
  • Roles of various players in the development process and their interaction
  • Approaches to reform in the areas of domestic economy and international economic relations, public administration (good governance, fight against corruption, and reorganisation) and social as well as political systems.
