Newsletter 36

Dear Reader,

Now we are close to the Christmas break and the end of the year is approaching. So it’s time to look back on what happened last month in the IEE and take a sneak peek at the coming year, 2023.

Being back at the office after all these Covid-19 lockdowns gave us the opportunity to work together with different groups of students and researchers. In the context of the EU-funded European Joint Doctorate, “ADAPTED”, we were pleased to welcome four PhD students for their secondments at the IEE. More information on these secondments, the training programs of ADAPTED and some impressions from the perspective of Natalia Zakharchenko, one of the ADAPTED PhD students, can be found in this Newsletter.

MADM students from both the Bochum and Cape Town groups are currently staying in Bochum. While the Cape Town group arrived here for the Summer School in Bochum and their subsequent internship after having completed their first semester in Cape Town, the Bochum Group started with the Summer School in Bochum and headed into their first semester. In this newsletter, you can read about experiences within the MADM programme, both from students and IEE staff.

Despite welcoming several new faces, we had to say goodbye to some as well. Our librarian, Dorothee Sensen, who worked for the IEE for about 35 years, has gone into retirement. We thank her for all her committed work, not only in the IEE library, but also online, on our website. Next year, we are looking forward to presenting a new design of our website - so stay tuned! The library will remain open and books can be borrowed upon request. We also said goodbye to our colleague, Dr. Christina Seeger, who left to work in the private sector. We wish her all the best! Britta Niklas has taken over the coordination of the PhD IDS from her.

In the upcoming year, the IEE is looking forward to new projects, but after having experienced a pandemic, and then the war in Ukraine and the related energy crisis, we are patiently waiting for opportunities to come our way and are working hard behind the scenes to see what exciting projects (and budgets) the coming year will bring.

From all of us at the IEE, Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year!

Sincerely,
