Since January 2016 the IEE has been an official member of the German Partnership for Sustainable Textiles, a multi-stakeholder initiative, comprising retailers in the textile and clothing industry, trade unions, civil society organizations, state agencies, and research institutions. The members of the Partnership are devoted to pooling their strength and expertise to achieve social, ecological, and economic improvements along the textile supply chain. The Partnership for Sustainable Textiles was launched with prominent support from the German Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Dr. Gerd Müller, in 2014. The IEE is represented through its Director, Professor Markus Kaltenborn, and further researchers from Bochum involved in the interdisciplinary, multi-university research project, "Political Authority and Transnational Governance-Arrangements: Regulation through Public and Private Labour, Social and Environmental Standards in the Asian Textile and Apparel Industry", funded by the Mercator Research Center Ruhr (MERCUR).
Since mid-February, the IEE has participated regularly in the activities of one of the working groups of the Partnership. The expertise generated through this research project allows for informed input to discussions, while exchanges with other members of the Partnership provide researchers with new insights. We are looking forward to reporting on progress of the Partnership for Sustainable Textiles in the near future.
