1st Unitar Conference Emmanuel Monyei

He presented a paper at one of the break-out sessions during the conference. In his presentation titled, ‘Neither nameless nor faceless: Climate change and the human security of SIDS’ citizens’, he discussed the limitations of the extant international legal order and Human Rights Based Approaches (HRBAs) in protecting climate refugees from Small Island Developing States (SIDS). He re-iterated the limitations of utilizing the language of climate ‘change’ for the most affected people who see such changes as an actual ‘crisis’, as it affects their nationality and core national identity. He proffered alternative approaches to protect SIDS’ citizens in the context of climate induced displacements, through Third World Approaches to International Law (TWAIL), and under Human Security Based Approaches (HSBAs).
