50 Years Institute of Development Research and Development Policy, Alumni Conference & 6th Development Day

On the eve of the Alumni-Conference "Doing Good with Business? Corporate Social Responsibility, Social Entrepreneurship, and Fair Trade" the IEE celebrated its 50th anniversary. IEE Alumni, starting from the founding generation, current institute members, students and partners met for an event which included a keynote speech of Prof. Christof Hartmann on Perspectives of Democracy in the Global South as well as a review of the institute’s activities over the last 50 years.

International Alumni Conference from 9-11 of November 2016

The Institute of Development Research and Development Policy (IEE) of Ruhr-University Bochum (Germany) is happy to host the international conference:

"Doing Good with Business?
Corporate Social Responsibility, Social Entrepreneurship, and Fair Trade"

taking place 9-11 of November 2016.

On three days, approximately 200 conference participants – practitioners, researchers, and students – discuss different approaches which aim at improving the social and environmental effects of production standards and business models: Corporate Social Responsibility, Fair Trade, and Social Entrepreneurship. Diverse questions are addressed, like to which extent those approaches actually fulfil the expectations set in them, whether they are economically viable, what the dominant current challenges as well as the prospects for future developments of these concepts are.

Former MADM student Chifundo Patience Chilera has been named one of 26 Africa's Most Outstanding Emerging Women Leaders

We are very proud of our former MADM student Chifundo Patience Chilera, who has been named one of 26 Africa's Most Outstanding Emerging Women Leaders by the Moremi Initiative for Women Leadership in Africa. As a 2015 Fellow, she will be attending the Moremi Initiative Leadership, Empowerment and Development Institute hosted jointly with the University of Ghana in Accra, Ghana, this July.

Approval of Funding for Joint UA Ruhr GC Research Project

The project entitled "Political authority in transnational governance arrangements: Regulation through public and private labour, social and environmental standards in the Asian textile and apparel industry" is the first research project under the umbrella of the UA-Ruhr Graduate Center to receive third-party funding. From the IEE, Markus Kaltenborn and Johannes Norpoth are part of the team of researchers. After defense of his doctoral thesis on Tuesday, 28 October 2014, IEE member Tobias Thürer was awarded the degree of a Doctor (Dr. rer. oec.) of the Faculty of Economics at RUB.

Urban Food Plus Summer School in Tamale, Ghana

This year’s Summer School of the BMBF-funded research project Urban Food Plus (UFP) took place from 30 September to 5 October 2014 in Tamale, Ghana. The Summer School was hosted by the University for Development Studies (UDS), one of the African partners within the UFP project that aims at enhancing resource use efficiency and improving food security in urban and peri-urban agriculture of West African cities. Wilhelm Löwenstein, Martina Shakya, Marc Hansen and Lesley Hope attended the Summer School on behalf of the IEE, which is implementing one sub-project of UFP.

Iliso Youth Choir in Bochum: moving voices and performances

During the last week of September, several musical performances of the Iliso Youth Choir from Khayelitsha, Cape Town electrified the audience in Bochum. For most of the young people it was the first time abroad. Vivian Zilo, the founder of Iliso Care Society, accompanied the group. Besides their highly moving performances, the choir members gave an insight into life in a township and introduced the activities of the Iliso Care Society.
